Former San Jose State Head Football Coach Dr. Fitz Hill instructs on the virtues of student achievement.
NFL ALUMNI: HELPING KIDS

Steve Kinney (ex-Chicago Bear), Director Steve Nicolopulos, guest speaker and San Jose State Head Football Coach Dr. Fritz Hill, instructor Ralph Crame, tutor Ed Hackbarth, NFLA vice president Larry Schreiber (ex-San Francisco 49er).
The NFL Alumni All-star Program is an after-school tutor and mentoring program geared to help underachieving high school student athletes. It was started at Woodside High School under the direction of Steve Nicolopulos, with help from the Northern California Chapter of the NFL Alumni Association and sponsors Pat and James Warren.

The program begins with a student commitment of two hours per day, two days per week for nine weeks. During that time, student athletes work on daily assignments, homework and projects. The curriculum also provides test preparation for the for the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) and STAR test (Standards Test and Research).

Woodside High School math teacher and football coach Ralph Crame guides a student through a homework exercise.

In addition to reviewing the basic skills necessary to succeed on these standardized tests, the students are taught basic test taking strategies. Students work with credentialed teachers and volunteers from local universities and colleges at a four to one (student to teacher) ratio. Class size never exceeds fifteen students, which allows greater interaction and creates a rich learning environment.

A motivated student applying herself toward greater scholastic achievement.

The use of technology is another major focus of the program. Using computers and tools such as Nova Net and EDUSOFT software, the students can broaden their technological competency. The software also tracks the students' accomplishments as they complete the program, providing the instructor with invaluable data that can be used to shape curriculum and identify individual strength and weaknesses. The students are given access to all the tools necessary to become successful in school.

At the end of each day's session, students are provided a hot meal and are enlightened by motivational guest speakers from the sports and/or business world. Emphasis is not only placed on being a student in the classroom, but also being a responsible citizen outside of class. Through this program, students will gain the self-discipline and confidence needed to achieve their goals in the classroom, allowing them to fulfill their dreams on and off the playing fields.

Students are fortified with a hot dinner, enjoyed while listening to motivational guest speakers from the sports and business world.
